Desktop-Client Platforms

The client-server desktop platform is described by its hardware, operating system, and client software.

  • Hardware: The Blue Book Store’s supported client-server desktop is based on the Intel processor (Pentium class). The Bookstore’s preferred vendor is Dell, and the recommended product lines are the Optiplex desktop and the Latitude laptop series.

  • Operating System: Windows 2000/XP

  •  Client Applications: A client application is a software program that connects the desktop computer to its corresponding server-based component. Client applications by themselves provide no, or minimal, functionality. They require a connection to their “application server.” The server and client components must be in sync (i.e. compatible versions) for all functions to work correctly. The table below is an alphabetical list of supported clients.

Client Application Version
Client 32 (Novell) 4.83 on WinNT SP1
FTP - SSH Secure Shell 3.0
Host Explorer (Hummingbird) 6.1
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0/6.0
Telnet - SSH Secure Shell

3.0

Desktop Applications:

A desktop application can be completely installed on the desktop computer’s hard drive and does not require a network connection to a corresponding “server application” to provide its functionality. Desktop applications do, like client applications, depend upon the underlying desktop operating system. The Blue Bookstore currently supports 32 bit Windows applications. Below are the specific products for which both technical and user support are available.
