Data Infrastructure

The data infrastructure shows the Internet and Extranet
servers outside a firewall, which refers to a PCORACLE
production web database. Inside the firewall is the Intranet server, with a main database. This also has access to the production web database outside the firewall and an Inquiry system. There is a stand-alone testing environment consisting of test servers for the extranet and Internet with a main test database and a test database.

Web Infrastructure

The diagram drawn below displays the Web Infrastructure of the Peace Corps. The entire web infrastructure is split into four different components.

1) The external Web Layer

2) The DMZ – Demilitarized Zone

3) Security Layer

4) The internal Intranet layer.

1) The external layer in the diagram signifies the External audience which can be considered to be the external public viewing the various postings of the peace Corps.

2) DMZ - A Demilitarized Zone is used by a company that wants to host its own Internet services without sacrificing unauthorized access to its private network. In case of the peace corps the DMZ resides between the Internet and the organizations external line of defense which is a firewall. There are 2 server systems running in the DMZ :

a. The Internet Production Server which contains the web server, application server and an Oracle database which holds the web pages which can be viewed by the public

b. The Extranet Production Server contains the web server, application server and the database and holds information accessible to authorized users.

3) Firewall : The firewall provides security to the remaining intranet of the Peace Corps

4) The internal Layer consists of the intranet, which is accessible to the employees of the Peace Corps. The internal layer also has the test servers for the Internet, the extranet and the intranet where information and applications being hosted on the servers are first posted for test purposes and then moved to the production servers. The internal Layer also holds the Head Quarter information, Regional Offices and VSAT Posts.
